Safe Motherhood: Reducing Maternal Mortality in Rural Somalia
Last Updated : March 3, 2025
In a remote village in the Galgaduud region, expectant mothers faced high risks during childbirth due to the lack of healthcare facilities and skilled birth attendants. Many women gave birth at home without medical assistance, leading to high maternal and infant mortality rates.
Recognizing the urgent need for maternal healthcare, PASOS established a maternity clinic equipped with trained midwives, essential medical supplies, and emergency referral systems for complicated cases. The organization also launched awareness campaigns to educate women on prenatal care, safe delivery, and postnatal health.
Asha, a young mother, was one of the first to benefit from the new clinic. During her pregnancy, she received regular checkups and nutritional support. When she went into labor, trained midwives ensured a safe delivery, and both mother and baby received postnatal care.
Since the clinic’s establishment, maternal deaths in the village have significantly declined, and more women are seeking professional medical assistance during childbirth. Through PASOS’ commitment to maternal health, communities now have access to lifesaving healthcare services, ensuring that no mother loses her life while bringing a new one into the world.
