History
Background
Peace Action Society Organization for Somalia (PASOS) was established in 1997 in Mogadishu by a dedicated group of Somali civil society intellectuals and peace advocates.
PASOS emerged at a time when Somalia was deeply fragmented by conflict, instability, and social division. The founders of PASOS recognized the urgent need to create neutral platforms for dialogue, reconciliation, and conflict resolution among warring factions and communities.
In its early years, PASOS focused intensively on grassroots peacebuilding initiatives, successfully mediating disputes between rival clans and promoting community-level reconciliation. Between 1997 and 2004, PASOS spearheaded and completed over 25 localized peace restoration missions, bringing lasting peace to regions torn by inter-clan violence. Notably, the organization played a key role in stabilizing relations among communities in Elwak (Gedo Region), Banadir, Burhakaba, Baidoa, Hudur (Bay Region), and other areas across southern and central Somalia.
These interventions were instrumental in halting cycles of violence and fostering mutual understanding among conflicting parties. PASOS employed inclusive and participatory approaches, involving elders, women, youth, and religious leaders to ensure that peace processes were locally owned and sustained.
Building on the success of its peace initiatives, PASOS evolved in the mid-2000s to expand its scope beyond conflict resolution. The organization recognized that sustainable peace must be supported by efforts to address the root causes of instability—such as poverty, food insecurity, poor governance, and lack of access to basic services. In response, PASOS strategically broadened its mandate to include humanitarian relief, development programming, and community resilience building.
Today, PASOS is a well-established national NGO committed to improving the lives of Somalia’s most vulnerable populations. Our work now spans across key thematic areas including food security and nutrition, environmental stabilization, health, child protection, gender justice, peacebuilding, education, and natural resource management. Our operational reach covers much of southern and central Somalia, where we continue to support conflict-affected, displaced, and marginalized communities through a combination of emergency response and long-term development strategies.
Over the years, PASOS has built a solid reputation for integrity, neutrality, and impact. We are trusted by communities and development partners alike and have formed strong working relationships with national and regional authorities, UN agencies, international NGOs, and grassroots organizations.
