Our Agriculture and Livelihood Support Program aims to strengthen rural economies, rehabilitate productive assets and improve the resilience of vulnerable households in South Central Somalia. Through targeted interventions the program works to restore farming systems, promote sustainable agricultural practices and create diverse income-generating opportunities for communities.

Key Agricultural Support Activities

The program has implemented a range of initiatives to enhance agricultural productivity and resilience, including:

• Rehabilitation of canals and river embankments to improve irrigation and prevent flooding.
• Distribution of essential farm inputs and implements to increase crop yields.
• Provision of agricultural extension training to farmers for improved farming techniques.
• Livestock restocking/destocking to strengthen pastoral livelihoods and prevent asset depletion.

Livelihood Diversification and Non-Traditional Farming

To reduce reliance on climate-sensitive agriculture and livestock PASOS promotes diversification into alternative and sustainable livelihoods such as:

• Fish Farming Introducing and expanding fish farming as a viable commercial activity, especially in areas with access to water bodies. Although fish consumption remains low in Somalia particularly outside coastal towns, it presents significant potential for economic growth and improved nutrition.
• Poultry Farming Encouraging small- and medium-scale poultry enterprises for income generation and protein-rich food supply.
• Beekeeping Supporting honey production as a low-cost, climate-resilient enterprise with both nutritional and commercial benefits.

Capacity Building and Economic Empowerment

PASOS supports communities by:

• Training youth and women groups in fish farming, poultry management and beekeeping techniques.
• Providing necessary farming and processing equipment.
• Delivering entrepreneurial and business skills training to strengthen market readiness.
• Facilitating access to micro-revolving grants to enable start-ups and scale-ups of small businesses.

Through these integrated interventions PASOS seeks to create sustainable income opportunities, improve food security and enhance the overall health and nutrition of Somali communities while reducing vulnerability to climate shocks and market fluctuations.
