For generations, the people of Kismayo relied on fishing for their livelihood. However, years of conflict and economic hardship left many fishermen without proper equipment, boats, or markets to sell their catch. The once-thriving fishing community struggled to survive, with many forced into alternative, less stable forms of income.

PASOS launched a fisheries support program aimed at revitalizing the local fishing industry. The organization provided fishermen with modern fishing gear, cold storage units to preserve their catch, and training on sustainable fishing techniques. PASOS also facilitated access to new markets, ensuring that the fishermen could sell their products at fair prices.

One of the beneficiaries, 45-year-old Hassan, had nearly given up on fishing after losing his boat to a storm. With PASOS’ support, he received a new boat and equipment, allowing him to return to the sea. Today, Hassan is not only providing for his family but also employing young men in his community, passing down valuable skills to the next generation.

The fishing industry in Kismayo is now thriving once again, demonstrating how strategic interventions can restore livelihoods and strengthen local economies.
