Ramadan Begins Amid Rising Displacement in Somalia

Published on : February 10, 2023

As Muslims across Somalia begin observing Ramadan, the month of fasting and reflection is overshadowed by the growing number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) struggling to survive. Severe drought, ongoing conflict, and economic hardship have forced thousands to flee their homes, seeking refuge in overcrowded camps with limited access to food, clean water, and healthcare. For many, the traditional spirit of Ramadan—marked by communal meals and generosity—feels distant as they face extreme deprivation.

Struggles of Displaced Families

For the displaced, breaking their fast has become a daily challenge. Many families rely on humanitarian aid or the goodwill of host communities to secure basic meals. The soaring prices of food and water make it even harder for struggling families to afford suhoor (pre-dawn meal) and iftar (evening meal), leaving many to endure prolonged hunger. With inadequate shelter and poor sanitation, the risk of disease outbreaks further threatens already vulnerable populations.

Communities and Aid Groups Step Up

Despite these hardships, the spirit of Ramadan is visible in the generosity of local communities and humanitarian organizations working to provide relief. Charitable initiatives have been launched to distribute food, water, and essential supplies to displaced families, ensuring that they can observe the holy month with dignity. Mosques and aid groups are organizing collective iftars, offering a sense of solidarity and hope amidst difficult circumstances.

A Call for Continued Support

The increasing number of IDPs highlights the urgent need for sustained humanitarian assistance. While Ramadan is a time of giving and compassion, the scale of the crisis requires long-term solutions, including food security programs, water access initiatives, and durable support for displaced communities. As Somalia navigates another Ramadan under challenging conditions, the resilience of its people remains strong, but immediate action is needed to alleviate their suffering.
